Angelo's Guitar

Biography ~ Angelo Spinazzola

Cape Breton born singer songwriter Angelo Spinazzola is a richly talented, diverse and ambitious interpreter of the human spirit. His eclectically curious musical explorations will take any music aficionado on a journey to treasure.

Spinazzola’s musical journey has been one of many travels throughout places of the globe, the mind and the heart. At the age of fifteen he began teaching himself guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin and flute. His vocal ability has been genetically inherited from his mother, a well-known songstress and performer in her day. As one music critic notes, “.. Angelo’s penetrating vocals combined with thought-provoking lyrics and a solid groove allow Spinazzola’s musical artistry to challenge the perceptions and values of the soul; harmony, cooperation, reverence for life and time passages and hope”. He and late brother and bluesman Carlo Spinazzola, began performing at the spry age of 17. In their early 20’s the brothers put together the 3-piece laid-back groove band Father John’s Medicine Train and later in the spontaneous power folk group, Green Eggs and Jam releasing No-Thing in 1991. Since then Angelo went on to jointly form The Vintage Pickers, performing originals and ballads from the Woody Guthrie era and then began focusing on his solo career.

His self-recorded and produced debut album release “Home from the Tides” in 1994 began another stage on the odyssey of songwriting and performing. Angelo has traveled throughout Canada, Europe, South America and Latin America sharing his experiences with, and of people he met on route. In 1994 he completed a double trans-Atlantic from Cape Breton to the Azores, Portugal on board the SORCA, a 55-foot Schooner. “I wouldn’t trade the experience for a million dollars, nor do it again for two million.” The voyage gave inspiration for his first solo album Home from the Tides. Hints of the sea’s influences in his latest musical endeavor, the 1997 release of “From Roots to Wings”, are ever present. This eclectic recording garnered him an East Coast Music Association Showcase at the 1998 East Coast Music Awards in Halifax.

During a lengthy hiatus from music, Spinazzola directed his focus on his business North River Kayak Tours, still writing and performing but not to the extent of the past. In August of 2003 Spinazzola’s brother Carlo asked him to perform on his new recording. The project was complete and 2 months later on November 12th - 2003 Carlo took his own life. Angelo was working on his own music at this time and decided to release both recordings on a double CD titled “Release” In May of 2006. The release of Release drew much attention both musically and conceptually. The recording was nominated in 2007 for an East Coast Music Award under the category Roots/Traditional Recording of the year. Spinazzola also performed on the National ECMA awards show playing harmonica and paying tribute to the late Dutch Mason, Denny Doherty and John Allen Cameron. Spinazzola continues to perform regularly now and is presently working on his 5th recording.
